Athens, 1 February 2024: Welcome to TWINRD, a research project advancing Europe’s approach to macroeconomic modelling  to support the Twin Transition, a harmonious movement towards a sustainable economy that is deeply integrated with digital progress.

The project, funded by the European Union in the framework of the WIDERA sub-programme, has kicked off at the headquarters of its coordinator, E3-Modelling, with the presence of the other three project partners (UNU MERIT, SEURECO and ISINNOVA). These four leading research institutes and SMEs will drive the project forward over the next three years with their extensive multidisciplinary experience in economic modelling, systems analysis, and data management.

While traditional economic models at the EU level support strategic planning for sustainable research and innovation (R&I), these often fail to capture the full scope of R&I activities, particularly in the realms of emerging green and digital technologies.

TWINRD will tackle these shortcomings by enhancing established models like GEM-E3 and NEMESIS, and by incorporating new data and technology classifications.

Improving how we model green and digital technologies and refining the tools used to evaluate the impacts of R&I policies on socio-economic and environmental outcomes, will enable TWINRD to help shape a more sustainable and technologically advanced economy.

In the spirit of openness and collaboration, all models and resources developed by TWINRD will be freely accessible via the project’s platform. Through active stakeholder interaction and inclusive dialogue in the TWINRD open forum, research and scenarios will be co-designed to ensure findings are comprehensive and actionable.
